What is the difference between a fiberglass and an organic shingle ?
The difference between a fiberglass and an organic shingle is the type of mat that is used in the production of each shingle. Organic mats, which are used to make organic shingles, are composed primarily of cellulose fibers derived from selected recycled paper or converted wood chips. On the other hand, fiberglass mats which are used to make fiberglass shingles, are composed of glass filaments of various lengths and orientations, bonded together with inert binders. In most climates, both shingles, if installed properly on well-made roof decks, perform similarly.
Do IKO shingles meet the Canadian building code ?
All IKO shingles, fiberglass and organic, meet the Canadian building code. IKO fiberglass shingles sold in Canada conform to CSA A123.5-98 product standards and IKO organic shingles conform to CSA A123.1-98 product standards.
Can I apply new shingles over existing shingles ?
Yes. You can apply new shingles over existing shingles, but it depends on the condition of the roof. If the roof has one layer of shingles that are lying flat and the deck is in good condition, the existing shingles typically do not have to be removed. Check with local officials to make sure that building codes are being followed. During re-roofing is a good opportunity to examine roof ventilation to ensure vents are sufficient in number, positioned properly and are unobstructed.
What offsets should be used for laminated shingles ?
For laminated shingles, the recommended offset is ten inches. Typically, laminated shingle offsets range from six to ten inches. Regardless of the shingle type, it is always best to follow all application instructions printed on the shingle package. This will ensure proper roof performance and finished roof aesthetics. Laminated shingles must be applied with a minimum offset no less than 4 inches.
Do I need to peel the release tape off the shingles ?
The plastic release film on the back of IKO shingles does not need to be removed. The sole purpose of this tape is to prevent the shingles from sticking together in the package. Once the shingles have been removed from the package and are applied in the correct orientation on the roof, the release tape serves no purpose whatsoever. The shingle sealant, which bonds the shingles together, is located elsewhere on the shingle and will seal succeeding courses of the shingles together on the roof when warmed by the heat of the sun, soon after application.
Installation
DECK PREPARATION
A Stable roof deck is an essential part of the roof structure. It must be firm, smooth and provide an adequate base for nailing
VENTILATION
Condensation can cause serious damage to Shingles, the roof deck and insulation. Attic spaces must be properly ventilated. Poor ventilation can cause premature deterioration of the shingles.
FLASHINGS
Most roofs have joints and breaks such as valleys, dormers, chimneys, vents, etc. Care must be taken that flashings are waterproof to avoid leakage at these danger points.
Asphalt shingles should be stacked only on smooth, even surfaces to avoid damaging the bottom shingles in the stack. They should be stacked no more than 15 bundles high, as too great a weight on the lower shingles may cause sticking in the bundle and bleeding of the asphalt coating through the granule surfacing. If stored outside, they should be protected from the weather, and in summer from the direct heat of the sun. Please use caution when stacking bundles on sloped roofs. Never apply asphalt shingles to roof slopes less than 2:12
Roll roofing must always be stored on its end and never be allowed to lie on its side which would cause distortion and possibles ticking in theroll. Care must be taken to avoid damage to the ends of the roll. Before using roll roofing, it must be unrolled flat then cut into convenient lengths of 12' to18' (3.5m to 5.5m) and laid out in a warm place until completely relaxed and flattened out. In cold weather, stand roll roofing in a warm place until pliable before unrolling.
Bituminous roof coatings, cements and adhesives tend to stiffen when cold. Before applying in cold weather, they should be kept in a warm place until readily workable.
